FedEx and Ryder Cup Notes

Corey Pavin and Colin Montgomerie at Cardiff Airport

I have to agree with Johnny Miller that Jim Furyk had more than $10 million at stake yesterday, he probably played his way into the Golf Hall of Fame. In my book he should be in even without the win. On the same note, it will be a travesty if Monty doesn’t make it. Even without a major he’s one of the best ever.

Listen up Fed Ex and PGA Tour, you’ve got to fix the scoring for the FedEx Cup. No one, not even the players on the final 9 really understand who might win. Golf has a couple of hundred years of historical precedent that in stroke play the low score wins. You aren’t going to change peoples’ minds with your crazy system. It would be like trying to change baseball during the world series and add in to runs scored points for most extra base hits, time in the field on defense, while subtracting the number of failed pick-off attempts. Are you guys serious!

Here’s a simple idea to get you pointed in the right direction: Keep everything the same up to The Tour Championship. The top five ranked players at that point should start the competition with minus strokes; say 5 for the top ranked player, decreasing to one stroke for the 5th ranked player. Everyone else starts at the normal zero.  Then play the competition straight up so that it looks like every other tournament where the low aggregate score wins on Sunday. That way we’d all understand the drama. Having a guy who finished tied for 25th be in the running until the last putt was mind numbing.

This year’s Ryder Cup could end up being a classic. If I was Corey, I’d tell Stuart Cink that he’s a seasoned pro and I’ll use him when I see fit, thank you very much. I’d tell Tiger and Rickey that I wanted them on the team, but their playing time will be determined by how they do. I’d start them in the first matches and if they win they get to continue.

Phil does best when he’s paired with a youngster, like he did at last year’s President Cup playing with Anthony Kim. So, put him with Dustin Johnson or, even better, put him with the other lefty bomber; Bubba. Pairing two players with the same style in foursomes makes perfect sense.

It would be hard not to put Woods and Stricker together after last year’s Presidents Cup performance. Steve seems a little worn out so putting him with Tiger may revive him and help Tiger at the same time.

I’d be tempted to give Furyk and Kuchar a rest after the grueling FedEx Cup series. They’ll both need some time to gather themselves, so keep them out of Friday’s morning matches.

Zach Johnson is Mr. Steady Eddy so he’d be a good choice to team with any rookie.

Good luck to both teams and let’s make sure that no one forgets the true spirit of the competition; respecting the game and your opponent. If anyone needs a reminder, just look at the actions of Stuart Payne and Jack Nicklaus in competitions past.

Good luck to all and let the games begin!
